CRC CARE, in
partnership with Environmental Laboratory Industry Group (ELIG)
held a workshop on the development of a consistent and harmonized
approach to the analysis and reporting of total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) on Friday, 1 May 2009 in Sydney.
The workshop was attended by nearly 100
participants including analytical chemists from different
environmental laboratories, regulators, consultants, auditors and
petroleum industry representatives from Australia and
overseas. The workshop focused on the inconsistencies in the
TPH analysis and reporting by different laboratories, and on
developing a consensus on the approach to TPH analysis. The issues
addressed at the workshop were new TPH banding based on CRC CARE
project on the health screening levels (HSL) of petroleum
hydrocarbons, defining and analyzing different bands.
The HSL work of CRC CARE was presented by
Eric Friebel of GHD Pty Ltd, which attracted a lot of interest from
the industry. David Springer of Envirolab and Danny Slee of
National Measurement Institute (NMI) presented the proposed
approaches to the TPH analysis and reporting, which was debated by
the attendees. At the end of the workshop, a consensus was reached
on the definition of TPH, and different bands. A Technical Working
Group (TWG) was proposed to be created to specifically address the
analytical methods of TPH. The TWG will be coordinated by Prashant
Srivastava of CRC CARE, and the outcome will be fed into the
National Environmental Protection Measures (NEPM) schedule
B(3).
