Dr Volker Birke and Dr Martin Wegner were
visitors to CRC CARE in January and were gracious to provide
presentations relating to their experience in the development and
implementation of Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs).

Dr Volker Birke is coordinator of RUBIN, a large-scale German
research and development (R&D) network/concerted action which
is funded by the German Federal Government. He holds a Ph.D. in
organic chemistry from the University of Hannover and works as a
lecturer, project leader and senior research scientist at the
University of Lüneburg (Suderburg) and his presentation was
relatign to ‘Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) for ground
water remediation’. Dr Martin Wegner is an engineer and
works as a consultant with Mull und Partner Ingenieurgesellschaft
engineering firm in the Hannover office, in Germany. He has
extensive experience in working on PRB technology in sites across
Europe. Martins presentation was relating to ‘PRB in
action -– results from a pilot scale in the German town of
Rheine’
