Project 6-4-01-05/06: Long term environmental impacts of AFFF and potential for formation of toxic perfluorinated metabolites

Project Leader: Associate Professor Megharaj Mallavarapu

Duration of Project: January 2006 - December 2007

Project Summary

Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) products are widely used across the world for fire-fighting and fire-fighting training. The constituents of these products have the potential to be persistent and have biological and ecological impacts. This two year project will first examine the environmental implications of past and current AFFF use at selected Defence sites, and assess the potential for different AFFF formulations to form toxic breakdown products.

The second stage of the project seeks to develop a rapid field assessment tool for AFFF products, as well as designing cost-effective biochemical remediation methodologies.
