Commercialisation

CRC CARE's philosophy is that commercialisation begins at the start of the research.

Our commercialisation and utilisation plan covers:

  • Business case planning in conjunction with partners;
  • Market segmentation in conjunction with partners;
  • International market access, primarily through partners, but also directly;
  • Critical mass and clustering of capability;
  • Targeted service / technology / product configurations for licensing;
  • National demonstration sites; and
  • Seed / venture capital access for SMEs as well as new ventures.

Investment by CRC CARE in its research programs is based on the technical viability and commercial value of the expected outputs, using financial and technology evaluation tools.

From the start, CRC CARE has embedded commercialisation, and business opportunity analysis and harvesting in every stage of its research and business process. This enables effective delivery of research value creation opportunities to stakeholders as well as helping to manage Australia's environment in a more cost effective fashion. The CRC engages technology incubation and investment capital providers as partners, to assist in the formation of new environmental technology enterprises.

Key elements in the strategy include:

  • Program planning and project identification with industry partners;
  • Value propositions with full opportunity assessment for all projects;
  • Specialist management for business development and commercialisation;
  • Research programs with performance management and milestones at all stages;
  • Maximising value delivery from research outcomes through: IP harvesting by industry partners (with preferential rights) for direct adoption; commercialisation companies; spin-offs and start-ups; and ventures with third parties in global markets;
  • Alliance management to develop strategic links into global markets;
  • Participation in international standards setting, seeking opportunities to lock in our technology; and
  • Industry cluster development, with direct involvement of small to medium enterprises.

Why do we need to commercialise research?

For CRC CARE to be successful, it needs to produce new technologies and ensure they are adopted. Commercialising new technologies is an important way of achieving this goal.

The adoption of new technologies requires more than just telling people about them. Facilitating the adoption of new technologies involves raising awareness of their existence, educating people of their value, providing them in a form that can be used, and then distributing and supporting them through good marketing and commercial services. Commercial partnerships in their various forms are therefore essential to ensure adoption of new technologies.
